Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
